Synopsis :

Chng Huck Theng’s  (Chng) solo exhibition entitled ‘The Journey’ touring Jakarta, Penang and KL in 2007/08 was a success, Chng new art series: ‘Brain Imaging : What You See and What You Want to See’ in Pace Gallery, Kuala Lumpur from 17 March to 3 April 2010 will be yet another fascinating and exciting presentation. Unlike ‘The Journey’ that conceptualized natural disaster such as the volcanic eruption to portray human perception and behavior, this up coming presentation; ‘Brain Imaging’ focuses on humans’ perceptions and experiences. Childhood fairytales and grownups’ myth combining with both legendary and mystical beings will provide the audience opportunity to recite their past experiences and knowledge in order to comprehend Chng’s latest creation. This new work of art promises audience of all ages to open up their minds to allowing them to explore their own mystical adventures that are long forgotten through time.

Chng is one of the most promising artists in Malaysia art scene. His has not only created a character for his creation but his abstract expressionism presentation is no doubt very powerful and unique. He is currently the youngest to sit as a Member in the Board of Trustee, National Art Gallery Malaysia and also the youngest to lead the oldest art society in Malaysia – The Penang Art Society that has a history of 57 years. In July 2009, Chng’s artwork entitled ‘Determination’ was presented by the Malaysian Government (Minister of Higher Education and the Malaysian Ambassador to France) to Europe oldest and most prestigious art school, Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts (ENSBA), in Paris. Making his work one of the few, if not the only, Malaysian artwork to be collected by ENSBA. Director Henry-Claude Cousseau, head of the school, received the painting.

Born 1972 in Malaysia, Chng’s meteoric rise through the art world is practically a fairytale, except for a fatal flaw – it is all true. He picks up the skills in Australia in 1994. In 2007, Chng is balanced right on the cusp of becoming a truly household name among Malaysian and Asian art aficionados with the launch of his dynamic, new collection and lavish coffee-table book – ‘The Journey’. The artist is only a youthful 37 years old but has traveled far on his own personal artistic journey. In the year (2008) he became one of the rare businessman turn artist in Asia to be have his creation acquired and displayed at the National Art Gallery Malaysia, ENSBA, Singapore Art Museum, Hong Kong University Museum & Gallery, Universiti Sains Malaysia, etc. He had his last art solo exhibition in Linda Gallery, one of Indonesia most prominent galleries that also has galleries in Beijing, Shanghai and Singapore.  A contemporary Asian artist and his work entitled ‘The Jekyll’ was sold in the Borobudor Auction House in Singapore 2008 for S$13,000. He does not only have a passion in art but also a heart to promote fellow artists. Ch’ng has donated some of his artwork for fundraising and charity auction as he felt that artists should also be involved in helping the unfortunates. His philosophy of being a good artist is not only about creating fascinating works but the artist himself needs to have a big heart to promote Malaysian art scene as a whole and also to help children that need a helping hands.

Chng’s upcoming works - ‘Brain Imaging : What You See and What You Want to See’ is definitely one of the exhibitions in 2010 that serious collectors and art lovers should not miss.
